Growing in Capel St. Mary
Show Secretary presentation 2024
Good afternoon and thank you for attending our Village Show. Our 46th Anniversary year saw yet again another successful event with 505 entries from 67 entrants. It has been a lovely weekend for visiting the Show, the weather, up to writing this report this morning, has been good and we have had a lot of people looking around at all the marvellous exhibits.
I cannot necessarily say that the weather this year has been kind all the time and this has reflected on the numbers of entries we have had. Something we need to be prepared for in our changing climate. Although in saying that and from talking to a lot of you over the weekend, we are down on entrants, the lowest for 7 years which reflects on the number of entries too. We are 76 entries down on last year and our lowest number of entrants since 2005. Is this a reflection not only on the changing environment, but with people’s lives, interests, priorities and health? We have had quite a few new entrants this year which is encouraging.
As I have mentioned every year to you all, our Sponsorship is vital to allow us to run the Show and without the huge efforts of Angie Armitage and Charles Heath who chase and source new sponsors, we would not have such a functional show enabling us to continue to use the village hall, supply our winners with prizes as well as the brilliant prizes we are able to provide in the Grand Draw from the sale of our draw tickets and other competitions and games we run. We also receive many donations made by anonymous members. We very much appreciate all this support, thank you.
For those of you interested in the statistics of this years’ Show.
Comparing the figures with the last 2 years:
Vegetables - Group A - We were down by 23
Mammoth - Group B - No record Breakers this year - Good year with 2 up on last year. This group appears to be popular
Floral - Group E - We were down by 12 on the previous 2 years
Capel Residents - Group F - As in Group E, we were down by 12 on the previous 2 years
The Novelty Award - Group I - were down by 11
Fruit - Group J - were down by 15. People said their raspberries & blackberries were finished
Flowers & Foliage - Group K - were up by 8 but, last year was a poor year
Cookery Group - Group L - Lower than last year by 8 but on par with 2022
Handicrafts - Group M - were down by 4 last year but last year was a good year. This Class is increasing in popularity
Art - Group N - Very low this year, let’s hope this improves next year. We had more interesting subjects this year that may have posed a hesitation for some exhibitors. What we did have were fabulous.
Photography - Group O - We were up on last year by 6 but still lower than our record year in 2022 of 109 entries compared to this year’s 51
Childrens - Groups P & Q - Were on par with last year & 2022. The photography subjects have proved popular.
Lastly, I would like to say to you all, entrants, sponsors, committee and volunteers, who have and continue to contribute and make this Show every year fantastic. Thank you.
After the presentations can I ask you all to clear away your exhibits but not until after the prize draws, thank you.
