Capel Allotments Association - Guide To Gardening In December

Season's greetings to all our members and readers.

VEG PLOT: - Continue winter digging. Mushroom Compost is available at £30 a ‘Bucket’ load delivered to the Pound Lane site; call 01473 310380 to order from Capel Mushrooms. Sow or plant lettuce under cloches. Check brassicas for white fly and spray as necessary. Harvest sprouts and winter cabbage. Leeks and parsnips can be left in the ground until needed.

CAPEL ALLOTMENTS ASSOCIATION'S - GUIDE TO GARDENING IN NOVEMBER

VEG PLOT: - Pick frost tender crops, clear ground and get started on winter digging incorporating well-rotted manure, composted garden waste or mushroom compost (contact Capel Mushrooms on 01473 310380 for more details). Sow broad beans, lettuce under cloches and peas under fleece. Plant garlic cloves. Apply slug pellets. Cut back yellowing asparagus foliage to 2". Feed compost heaps with sulphate of ammonia.

Cut down uncultivated areas and spray regrowth with Bio Glyphosate ready for next season. Water plants thoroughly in dry weather; do not waste time and water by indiscriminate spraying. Feed containers weekly with Maxicrop liquid feed. Stock up with lumpwood charcoal for those late summer barbecues.

Cut down uncultivated areas and spray regrowth with Bio Glyphosate ready for next season. Water plants thoroughly in dry weather; do not waste time and water by indiscriminate spraying. Feed containers weekly with Maxicrop liquid feed. Stock up with lumpwood charcoal for those late summer barbecues.

ALLOTMENTS ASSOCIATION'S GUIDE TO GARDENING - AUGUST

Hoe weekly to stop weed seeds germinating. Cut down uncultivated areas and spray re-growth with Bio Glyphosate  ready for next season. Apply path weed killer. Water plants thoroughly, do not waste time and water by indiscriminate spraying. Top-dress containers with horticultural 4mm grit. Feed weekly with Maxicrop or Phostrogen. If going on holiday arrange for a friend to water plants in containers, frames, greenhouse, outdoor tomatoes, marrows, courgettes and cucumbers. Encourage them to pick ALL sweet peas, courgettes, french and runner beans as these will stop producing if left on the plant. Stock up with ‘Restaurant Quality’ lump wood charcoal for those impromptu barbecues.

Hoe weekly to stop weed seeds germinating. Cut down and spray uncultivated areas. Scatter slug pellets responsibly. Water plants. Top-dress containers. Feed weekly. If going on holiday arrange for a friend to water plants. Tell them to pick ALL sweet peas, courgettes, french and runner beans as these will stop producing if left on the plant. Stock up with charcoal for those impromptu barbecues.

GUIDE TO GARDENING ~ JUNE

SELECTION OF VEG AND FLOWER PLANTS PLUS BUNCHES OF FLOWERS  AT THE HUT AS AND WHEN AVAILABLE


Hoe weekly to keep weeds at bay or apply Weedol or Bio Glyphosate. Scatter slug pellets selectively. Rake in 4oz sq. yd. Growmore or Chicken Pellets prior to sowing or planting. Kill weeds on paths and drives. Top-dress containers with grit. Feed weekly with Maxicrop  or Phostrogen. Stock up with lump wood charcoal for those impromptu barbecues.
