CAPEL ALLOTMENTS ASSOCIATION'S - GUIDE TO GARDENING ~ SEPTEMBER

Throughout lock down we were able to keep our members supplied with compost, feeds, salt, charcoal, bird food & garden sundries and have welcomed many new members. Joining now will give you membership through to the end of 2021 and you can take advantage of THIS years seed & potato schemes.  

Membership is just £5 a year and is open to both plot holders and non-plot holders alike, wherever you live. A visit to ‘THE HUT’ should easily recoup this investment when you take advantage of our special bulk buy prices. Always amazingly low prices. Download a form now from our web site.


Cut down uncultivated areas and spray regrowth with Bio Glyphosate (100ml £1) ready for next season. Scatter slug pellets (835g £2.50). Water plants thoroughly in dry weather, do not waste time & water by indiscriminate spraying. Feed containers weekly with Maxicrop liquid feed (£2.50ltr) . Stock up with lumpwood charcoal (12kg now only £10) for those late summer barbecues.

VEG PLOT :- Get started on your winter digging. Plant spring cabbage & Japanese onion sets which mature in June (sorry we will not be offering these for sale at the hut) . Sow hardy salad onions, red cabbage & parsley also lettuce & carrots to be covered with a cloche in October. Start digging up your late potatoes before it gets too wet. 25kg Potato sacks available at 80p each and veg/onion bags 30p.   

FRUIT :- Apply grease bands @£4.50 or fruit tree grease @£4.50 a 200g tub now. Pick soft fruit & tie in new shoots. Remove fruited canes & feed with potash. Prune apples, pears, peach, plum & damsons.Order new plants, try Autumn raspberries which are very prolific & don’t need protecting from the birds.

GREENHOUSE :- Remove shading. Take cuttings of shrubs, heather's, geraniums & fuchsias. Insert into open sandy compost (potting grit £5.50, Compost £5.30) in pots (from 5p). Full size rigid trays @ £1.70 & half size flexi's @ 10p are available. Control aphids with a r.t.u Insect Spray (£3.50). Feed tomato, cucumber, pepper & aubergine's plants weekly with tomato feed (£2.50ltr.). Remove yellowing leaves from tomato plants to allow fruit to ripen. Plant up Strawberry runners in 3 or 4 ltr. pots for an early crop in the Spring. Sow carrots, beetroot, raddish or spring onions thinly in large pots and keep watered for a winter crop.

FLOWERS :-Plant spring flowering bulbs in pots (compost £5.30, grit £5.50) or outside as soon as space is available. Remove summer bedding when damaged by frost and put in your compost bin. Dig flower beds and feed with chicken pellets (20kg £11) Plant Wallflowers, Sweet Williams, Polyanthus and Pansy's by the 20th October while the soil is still warm. This will allow the plants to develop a strong root system before Winter. Control insects with Bio Sprayday (30ml £7.50). Mulch borders. Divide & transplant rock plants. Prepare heather beds by digging in peat & bone meal (5kg £4.50).

LAWNS:- Re-seed worn areas (grass seed £4.40 per kg.). Aerate & scarify. Apply a dressing of sharp sand (£2 a bag), an autumn feed , 5kg treats 70sq mtrs (£5.50), a selective weed killer  and to control moss, lawn sand, 5kg treats 70sq mtrs (£2.50) or spray with an Iron Sulphate solution of 30g per litre of water per 5sqm of lawn (£1.50p for 1kg.). Mow with blades set at medium height.

ALLOTMENT NEWS

 “THE HUT” - "THE HUT" is open 10-12 noon Saturdays throughout September to the end of October.

Plants & surplus veg available throughout the week.

We are happy to continueon-line deliveries for members living in the local area who continue to self-isolate or cannot get to the hut when we are open. If you wish to pre-order for collection on Saturday please order by Friday evening (see details below)

A limited supply of £3 bunches of seasonal flowers is available on Saturdays or to pre-order, including table centres, boxed arrangement or tributes & price contact Sue via hut.manager@capelallotments.co.uk

SAVE ££££££££’s - AUTUMN SEED SCHEME - NSALG seed and our own potato seed order forms will be with you soon. If you regularly buy vegetable and flower seeds from us you will know that these schemes can bring you huge savings on normal retail prices. Seed orders can now be placed on line.  POTATO & FRUIT orders must be in by the 15TH OCT. SEEDS orders by the 5TH NOV will help your allotments association. For more details please contact Phil .

CULTIVATOR HIRE - A cultivator is available for hire for on-site use only. The fee is £10 for the first two hours. Hire time runs from handover and ceases when the machine is returned to the machinery shed. Please give Dennis advance notice to hire this equipment or for any matters relating to the site please contact Dennis.

THE ALLOTMENT SITE - Please remember to social distance & use the hand washing facilities near The Hut & at the BBQ area.

PLOTS -  The site is full & we have a waiting list for vacated plots. Please complete the form on our web site to add your name to the waiting list. Should a plot become available the Site Manager will then contact you to see if you are still interested.


 

Online Sales From "The Hut"

Preferably payment will be by Bank Transfer (BACS) to Capel St Mary Allotments Association with your name in the reference box or by card or cash for those who do not use online banking.

Members can place your order by email to hut.manager@capelallotments.co.uk stating the exact description of each item, the price, how many are required and the total price of the item. The total cost of the whole order must also be included. Please also include a contact number and your address and indicate how you wish to pay.


You will receive confirmation of your order by email and delivery information for members living in the local area.
