If soil is too wet to dig or rotovate, spend an hour clearing bean poles, weeds and old brassicas so you’re ready when conditions improve.
Complete digging and incorporate farmyard manure or compost
Rake in Growmore, Blood Fish & Bone, Rooster Pellets or organic Farmyard Manure before sowing

Use fleece for frost protection or to warm the soil.

Feed established plants with potash
Mulch with peat, compost or manure

Spray affected trees (mildew, apple scab, aphids, codling moth)
Apply general fertiliser
Start picking rhubarb.
Remove dead daffodil heads; apply 2oz general feed per clump
Lift and divide overgrown perennials
Plant rose bushes (add bone meal), prune and feed established roses
Prune hardy fuchsias
Sow hardy annuals
Plant autumn-sown sweet peas (support with 6ft canes or 1.5m net)
Plant heathers and mulch
Take cuttings: winter begonias, dahlias, heliotrope
Re-seed worn areas (pre-mix with John Innes Seed or No.1 compost)
Aerate with wire rake
Cut grass on dry days (blades set high)
Apply low nitrogen Autumn/Winter feed (5kg treats 140sqm)
Control moss with Iron Sulphate (30g per litre per 5sqm)
⚠️ Care: Iron Sulphate stains hard surfaces and clothing.
